More than almost any other car in history, the Yugo has a universally bad reputation. But the reality of the plucky carmaker from the former Yugoslavia actually reveals a misunderstanding of the highest order. When they debuted in 1986, the Yugo was the least expensive car on the market, and excellent value for the price.

It was the sanctions that were placed on Yugoslavia that spelled the end for the yugo, not mechanical problems as the legend now has it. Indeed, at the time, no more economical and affordable car was available.

Never the most groundbreakingly stylish of cars, the Yugo nevertheless had it's place in the landscape. Today, it's almost of badge of honor to own one, and their rarity has caused their value to go up considerably. Eastern Europe's most famous car, for better or worse the Yugo will go down in automotive history.
