Velcro - available at 7 stores *

Taking a close look at the burrs that relentlessly attached themselves to his trouser leg while on walks in the woods, Georges de Mestral had an idea. What if the tiny hooks that Mother Nature used to attach seedpods to passing surfaces could be reproduced artificially? They could, it turned out, and Velcro was born.

Today, the ingenious invention is everywhere and used to fasten almost anything to everything. From shoes and clothes, to tents and furniture, the tough little fabric has a million uses. The Velcro brand is based in New Hampshire and but strips of the sticky stuff can be found as far away as The International Space Station.

People throughout history have always fastened things together. But since the 50s, the process became a lot less permanent. Velcro was voted as one of the century's best inventions, and seems destined to be with us forever.
