The Bancroft Library - available at 1 store *

When Hubert Howe Bancroft discovered in 1863 a 75-volume history of California and the West in his local bookstore, he was bitten by a collecting bug. His arsenal soon covered much of America's west, Alaska, British Columbia, Mexico, and Central America. He added the "Bancroft Dictations", original interviews with living legends, and collected the estates of notable people.

Acquired by the University of California in 1905, the Bancroft Library expanded to include a Rare Books Collection and the Mark Twain Papers and Project, as well as regional history and pictorial archives.

Now housed in the University of California, Berkley, it is the campus' primary special collections library. This legacy is commemorated with an extensive print and apparel collection, including portraits, images of the frontier, and historic advertisements.
