Released in 1995, Pocahontas is a Disney animated classic. The story of Pocahontas is loosely based on the real life encounter between the native Powhatan tribe and the Jamestown, Virginia colonists.
The story begins with the landing of a ship of British sailors on North American soil. On that ship is the prince-like Captain John Smith, who later is Pocahontas' object of affection. Pocahontas first notices on-coming ships as she's having a conversation with Mother Willow about her up-coming marriage. From here the story takes off into a historical world of Native traditions. Throughout the film, the story line stresses the importance of acceptance.
The theme song "Colors of the Wind" was honored with an Oscar and Golden Globe for best song.
