The Lilly Pulitzer clothing company began with Lilly selling juice at a stand in Palm Beach. She quickly found that oranges, lemons, limes and pink grapefruit reeked havoc on her clothes, so she had a dress made up in bright colors to hide the stains. With customers wishing to purchase the dress, she made more. Her acclaim reached stardom when old friend and then-first lady Jackie Kennedy was photographed wearing her classic pieces.
Since the 60s, the company has been the apparel of choice of the affluent at play, but she briefly retired her collection in 1984, reopening in1993. The company now has tops, sweaters, dresses, skirts, shorts, pants, outerwear, swimwear, accessories and gifts. They also offer a small collection of men's and children's apparel, along with shoes and bedding.
Lilly Pulitzer products are available at over 70 signature shops, as well as specialty and major department stores.
