Stern brought 5000 singing canaries with him to New York City, and managed to carve out a business for himself importing them from Germany and selling them to department stores. By 1932, he was the largest livestock importer in America. When he decided to expand his products to include packaged bird food, Hartz was born.

In the 1950s, Hartz expanded into fish and aquatic supplies. In the 1960, they expanded again into dog and cat products. Today, Hartz is a strong company with over 1500 quality products. Committed to animal health, they are actively involved in the community, supporting many humane animal organizations.
