Handspring - available at 5 stores *
Founded by the three original inventors of the Palm Pilot, Jeff Dawkins, Donna Dubinsky and Ed Colligan, Handspring designed and produced personal data assistants that used the Palm operating system. Started in 1998, the company operated as an independent entity until its 2003 merger with Palm, Inc. to form palmOne.
With products geared more toward the mass market rather than niche ones, Handspring succeeded in generating interest in PDAs throughout the public at large. Handspring devices were also compatible with Macintosh computers straight out of the box, which led to an increased market share.
By taking an innovative approach to the handheld computing industry, Handspring took PDAs from obscure products to mainstream items.
