Incorporated in 1852, Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is one of the oldest in America. It most certainly has the richest heritage. Manufacturing premium chocolate products since day one, Ghirardelli honors their history and is proud of their legacy.

Domingo Ghirardelli was born in Genoa, Italy in 1817. Raised by a confectioner, chocolate and coffee were in his blood. After sailing to Uruguay to participate in the South American chocolate industry, he was enticed by the stories of prosperity in America. He started up shop in San Francisco and was doing well, but both of his shops burnt to the ground in the Great Fire.

Domingo gathered his wits and opened Ghirardely & Gerard, the business that is now known as Ghirardelli. It was a roaring success and rapidly expanded. Domingo died at the age of 77 and his business was sold, but his legacy continues to thrive.
