Before Luigi D’Andrea, most guitar picks were vastly expensive pieces of tortoise shell. After seeing sheets of cellulose plastic for sale in 1922, Luigi saw an opportunity and seized it. He sold his first set of picks to a music store, and never looked back. Soon, a small factory was started, and before long the D’Andrea company was born.

Luigi encouraged guitarists to visit him and suggest improvements or alternate designs. In fact, after only a few short years in business, the D’Andrea catalog offered nearly all of the pick designs that many competitors claim to have only recently invented.
