Founded in 1958, Charles S. Roberts started Avalon Hill after the success of his game Tactics. The game was innovative because it used war-like scenarios and strategies in a board game setting. Many of the modern concepts of wargaming were introduced by Avalon Hill. Some of these include hexagonal grid, zones of control, combat results table (CRT), troop strength and morale.

Wizards of the Coast is a leading manufacturer and designer of hobby games. The company was founded in 1990 by PeterAdkinson.
