Andy Warhol was a commercial artist, whose work first sprouted in the 1950's. Warhol (as he later shortened his name to), shook the art scene in the 60's with his pop culture based work. Marilyn's, Campbell's Soup Cans and Disasters are among the most recognized pieces today. Warhol also published many illustrations for Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and The New Yorker.The artist had a brush with death in 1968, when the founder of the SCUM (Society for Cutting up Men) foundation shot him. Warhol survived the attack, but died almost 20 years later following routine surgery.
