The most famous athletic shoe of all time is the Chuck Taylor All-Star by Converse. First produced in 1923 to capture the basketball market, the model has changed very little over time.
Until 1966 you could get them in any color you wanted, as long as that was black or white. Since then, the choice of color has exploded and there are literally hundreds of different combos available. Black is still the most popular, and generations of kids have worn the iconic shoe - usually with their own handwriting on the white rubber parts.
A prime example of a style that never fades, Chucks are clearly a shoe from a bygone era, but every decade sees a massive renewal in their popularity. As much a fashion accessory as footwear, All-Stars occupy a unique place in American culture.
