The company was founded by Alex Gaines herself, formally Alex Gilbert. Her first company, Paper Denim & Cloth, was released in 1998 with the guidance of her father, Mudd founder Richard Gilbert. In 2004, Gaines was joined by Amy Caron, whose resume boasts four years experience at Sean John, a fine arts degree and a touch of fashion instruction in Italy.
