In 1979, former hairdresser Mike Score and his brother Ali launched the band A Flock of Seagulls. The four member group's major claim to fame was the MTV airing of their video "I Ran (So Far Away)," which drew attention to Mike's distinctive haircut.

The Liverpool, England based band was categorized as synthpop because of the dominant use of a synthesizer in most of their works. A Flock of Seagulls is quite distinctive because of their choice to eliminate sequenced arpeggios and electronic percussions. A combination of their sound and appearance helped lend to their "futuristic" image.

The name of the band was taken from a line in the Stranglers "Toiler by the Sea." The Flock of Seagulls album was released was released in 1995 but will not be the last as another is planned for 2007.
