The Cardigans's lead vocalist Nina Persson took some time off to work on a solo album. Nina released the 2003 lone venture, first in the UK, under the name A Camp. The album featured 14 tracks with titles such as "I Can Buy You," and "Hard as Stone."

The album is defined by clever juxtaposition of serious-minded lyrics with friendly, up-lifting beats. This style contrasted the darker image given way by The Cardigan's last touring album, Gran Turismo. A Camp may have had influence over The Cardigan's next albums in summer 2003 and again in 2004.

Producer Mark Linkous immediately said 'yes' to a tape of recorded solo songs that Nina handed to him after a show in Sweden.
