The "new punk" genre of the late 90s featured several rising stars - among them was 98 Mute of Hermosa Beach, California. Known for playing loud, hard and fast, 98 Mute rocked Warped Tour and other North American tours with fellow punk bands Pennywise and Blink-182.

The band was made up of vocalist Pat Ivie, guitarist James Page, bassist Doug Weems and drummer Justin Thirsk, brother to Pennywise founding member Jason Thirsk. 98 Mute was also unofficially managed, produced and bossed by another Pennywise member, Fletcher.

Although 98 Mute steadily climbed the rock ladder with four albums and a record deal with punk superstar label Epitaph Records, the band broke up in 2002.
