The 77s once played for Neil Young in California, and their track "MT" appeared on the popular TV series Beverly Hills 90210. The rockers got their start as the Scratch Band in the 1970's. Many of the band's lyrics were penned by poet and fellow Exit Records musician, Steve Scott.

In 1982, just before the band's release titled Ping Pong Over the Abyss, they changed their name to The 77s. Soon the band was signed to Island Records, and receiving rave reviews from Rolling Stone Magazine.

Existing members include vocalist/guitarist Micheal Roe, bassist Mark Harmon, and drummer Bruce Spencer.
