Indie band 764-Hero first hit the rock scene as a two-man band, consisting of singer & guitarist John Atkins and drummer Polly Johnson. With two 7" records, a full-length album and an EP, 764-Hero rapidly developed a national following.
764-Hero's second album included new bassist James Bertram, though he was later replaced by Robin P., while the third album also used a keyboardist. While much of the Seattle-based band's popularity stems from its impressive live performances (often when touring with Modest Mouse), it's actual name also created a following. The name, suggested by a friend, is the Washington State Department of Transportation phone number for reporting high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane violators.
In 2001, Atkins and friend created a second band, The Magic Magicians. As a result, 764-Hero disbanded in 2002.
