Ex-beauty pageant winner, Marilyn McCoo and friend Lamonte McLemore hooked up with 2 friends in L.A. to create the Hi-Fi's- which later caught the attention of Ray Charles. After touring with the legend, they started a new group because of internal disagreements.

The new group, The Fifth Dimension combined Soul, R&B and jazz to perpetuate strong, sassy vocals. The popular American vocal group was composed of five members. Billy Davis Jr., Ron Townson, Florence LaRue and the two founders climbed their way up the charts with various hits, including "Up, Up and Away" and "Aquarius Let the Sunshine In."

Many of Fifth Dimension's songwriters, such as Ashford & Simpson, went on to lead solo careers.
