The band 54-40 derived their name from the slogan "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight," which was used during US President James Polk's time in office. Part of the expansionist policy goal was to control a contested US-Canada border.
The members of this alternative group are from Vancouver, British Columbia. The group has been compared to R.E.M. because of their melodic and literate tracks. In 1981, the band originally began as a trio with bassist Brad Merritt, drummer Darryl Neudorf, and vocalist Neil Osborne. Soon, Phil Comparelli joined on and Matt Johnson replaced Neudorf.
It was the band's 1986 self-titled album that caught the attention of radio and record buyers across the country. 54-40's tracks were popular on US college radio stations, but never in the commercial arena.
