Named for the .38 Special pistol, this American rock band is a loose blend of blues- and arena-rock. In 1975, founding member and vocalist Donnie Van Zant started the group, with a very different sound.

Donnie's older brother was a member of Lynyrd Synyrd, which influenced 38 Special's earlier works with Southern Rock. Once the 80's hit however, the band drifted into a new genre. The group's more mainstream sound led to a chain of successful albums.

The six rockers were names 3rd best "Southern Rock Band of All-Time," by the listeners of a Birmingham radio station. In the early 80's, two of 38 Special's most well-known hits topped the Billboard magazine's album rock chart.
