In 1993, locals attended the Yamaha/Ticketmaster Soundcheck Music Competition for unsigned bands and were shocked by the rockin' power of 17 Reasons Why. The Detroit-based band easily knocked out the competition for the win.

The band moved onto the regional finals of the competition but was narrowly edged out by now-popular band The Verve Pipe. 17 Reasons Why and its addictive sound were immediately booked by a variety of venues before breaking up in 1996.

17 Reasons Why was formed by music vet Marco Platt, along with the late guitarist Vondy Campbell, bassist Larry Alder, drummer Johnny Kloka and a wealth of backing musicians and singers.
