Straight out of the Hollywood hub emerged the alternative rock, Christian-based band, 16 Horsepower. In 1992, David Eugene Edwards and Pascal Humbert met in Los Angeles were they worked on movie sets. Shortly after, Jean-Yves Tola joined the pair but was quickly replaced by Kevin Soll.

The music of 16 Horsepower has been described as a mix of rock, country, bluegrass, and folk music. The band's pieces were given an extra edge thanks to Edward's antique chemnitzer concertina, which resembles a squeezebox. The instrument, however, was falling apart and was quite a hassle to tour with in the bands earlier days.

In total, 16 Horsepower released 7 albums from 1995 to 2003. Some of the religious influence in their material originated from Edward's days following his Grandfather, the preacher.
