In the late 1990s, Detroit rock fans began hearing a return to rockabilly in the songs from alternative-rock band 12 Angry Steps. But the band's songs weren't the only thing for which 12 Angry Steps became known.

They made headlines at the end of the 20th century, when bassist Stevie St. Michael was almost trapped in a fire at the band's home. The other three members (vocalist and guitarist Dan Halen, lead guitarist Todd Mang and drummer Glynn Swig) and St. Michael made it out alive - and with only their music gear.

Two years later, the band fought back and released its first album, Innercity Hillbilly Lovesongs. Jim Diamond produced both the album and fellow Detroit band White Stripes' albums. In fact, before rising to stardom, the White Stripes opened for 12 Angry Steps in 1999.
